well worn

We walk on it, sit and lie down at times there too, but not enough attention is given to what a floor surface really does for a place. I love floors, well interesting floors that really give presence and full bodied character to a space. I took the photos below on a trip last year to Istanbul. The floor within Hagia Sophia is well worn to a beautiful shiny patina with all the centuries of travellers foot falls across it. It hints at the age and history of this mosque and holds its own stories of what has gone before.
